He is a professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music and is well known to BBC Radio 3 listeners for his series The Piano which ran to 54 episodes; he also regularly presented BBC Legends.

Piers Lane's recent appearances have included recitals in Amsterdam, Auckland, Bremen, Brisbane, Melbourne, Munich, Perth, Sheffield, Stockholm, Wellington and the Wigmore Hall; as well as the piano festivals of Duszniki, Husum, Manchester, Chopin at Bagatelles in Paris, La Roque d'Antheron, Singapore and the Ruhr. He performed Dohnanyi's Variations on a Nursery Theme with the Orchestre National de France at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Beethoven's Triple Concerto in the Prague Spring Festival with violinist Dmitri Sitkovetsky and Czech cellist Jiri Barta and Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall with the BBC Philharmonic.

Piers Lane's repertoire of some 60 concertos has led to engagements with many great orchestras, including five of the ABC orchestras; the six BBC orchestras; the Aarhus, BBC Scottish, City of Birmingham, Bournemouth, Gothenburg and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras; Auckland, London and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras; Hallé; Philharmonia; City of London Sinfonia and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Piers Lane is in great demand as a chamber music player, with invitations to the Adam New Zealand, Båstad, Cheltenham, Guildford, Newport, Norfolk & Norwich, Rotorua and Sydney Festivals. Special collaborations include duo recitals with British violinist Tasmin Little and two-piano recitals with Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin, with whom he has performed in London and Montreal. In Spring 2003 Anne Sofie von Otter invited him to perform with Bengt Forsberg and herself in Malmö, Stockholm and the Bergen Festival.

Piers Lane's extensive discography includes, on the Hyperion label, albums of d'Albert, Moscheles, Saint-Saëns and Johann Strauss Virtuoso Transcriptions as well as the complete Études & Preludes of Scriabin and, most recently, much-admired recordings of Grainger & Bach Transcriptions. For Hyperion's Romantic Piano Concerto series, he has recorded concertos by d'Albert, Paderewski & Moskowski, Parry & Stanford and Kullak & Dreyshock. His BMG Conifer recording of the Delius Violin Sonatas with Tasmin Little was awarded a Diapason d'Or and featured as Record of the Month in Repertoire.

Current and forthcoming highlights include solo recitals for Blackheath Halls Études Festival, Oxford International Piano Festival, Sydney International Piano Competition, Tonbridge Festival and Valldemossa Chopin Festival. In Spring 2004 he returns to the Auckland Philharmonic and performs Mahler's Piano Quartet, the Trout Quintet & Brett Dean's Voices of Angels in a seven-concert tour of Australia for Musica Viva.

"He brings frightening energy and intensity to his interpretations but never at the expense of good taste or musical shape. Having grown into a pianist of true maturity, Lane is never reticent in exploring the gamut of the instrument's sonorities."
Martin Buzacott, The Courier Mail, Brisbane
